Growing up, The Shower at times can be a mundane experience. The Shower is one of the tedious minutia of every day life that some people — especially on the tech side — seem to occasionally disregard. As with many other things like: brushing your teeth, cleaning your ears, washing your face, The Shower is something that once understood, is very valuable to your health: mental, physical, sexual, and spiritual. I’ve compiled a list of steps and products that for me, have changed my every day life.
While at a glance these steps may appear to be obvious, reading the details can help one to become enlightened.
Required Materials
Have the following available to you in the shower:
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Body Wash / Shower Gel
- Loofah
- Facial Wash
- Facial Scrub
- Toothpaste, Toothbrush (optional)
Step 1: Shampoo
First, begin with the hair. There aren’t many details to be given here. Apply shampoo and rub it throughout thoroughly. I’ve used Head and Shoulders for a long time and haven’t been recommended anything since. I’m open to suggestion when it comes to choice of shampoo.
Current product of choice: Head and Shoulders: Classic Clean
Step 2: Condition
This is why you begin with the hair. You want to apply the conditioner as soon as possible so that it can spend the time it needs to cleansing and conditioning your hair. Personally, I use American Crew Daily Conditioner. In addition to the great results, it gives you that fresh menthol feeling down to the scalp. Combined with the other products that I am going to recommend, by the time you’re done in the bathroom you’re going to feel fresher than a blast of cool mint.
Current product of choice: American Crew Daily Conditioner
Step 3: Wash Your Body
As your conditioner sets in, pour your shower gel or body wash into your loofah. Using a loofah or a mesh shower sponge is essential in getting a decent scrub on your skin and breaking away all that dirt and dead/dry skin. Clean thoroughly. I use Old Spice for a nice fresh scent and lather.
Current product of choice: Old Spice High Endurance Body Wash
Note: Wash your loofah weekly in the dishwasher to deal with the bacteria build up.
Step 4: Apply Facial Cleanser
Steps 4 and 5 are all about the product. Thanks to a good friend of mine, I was introduced to the Kiehl’s product line. These products are infused with menthol and not only do they keep my skin clear and smooth, but they invigorate you. Generally I apply a thumbnail of product in my hands, lather it up and rise my face, neck, and behind my ears.
Current product of choice: Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Energizing Face Wash
Step 5: Apply Facial Scrub
Rinse off the facial cleanser. Remember, you still have the conditioner in your hair so be careful not to wash that off.
The facial scrub is filled with small beads that gently scrub away dead skin and open your pores to prepare for a nice shave. I generally use this a maximum of once a day. You don’t want to use it too much or you will end up removing all important oils resulting in dry skin. This product is also infused with menthol. After using this product, your face will feel a cool refreshing that you’ve probably never felt before. It’s like breathing in cold mint, except with your pores.
Current product of choice: Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Energizing Face Wash
Step 6: Brush Teeth (optional)
This is a great time saver and mess saver. I brush my teeth in the shower because it gives more time for the conditioner to sit in my hair and I don’t have to worry about getting toothpaste on my clothes or mirrors. I should take my own advice here. I use a regular tooth brush, when I would recommend using an electrical.
Step 7: Rinse
Rinse off the facial scrub and the conditioner, and you’re all done in the shower!
Conclusion
If you follow these steps, you will have a rather quick (10 min) shower that would normally take longer and not be as effective in terms of cleaning. Feeling clean and refreshed plays a big role in confidence and general well-being.

I must say you have left out a vital recommendation. As you are my roommate’s boyfriend, you can often be found in our shower where you might have noticed I have installed a European style removable shower-head. I highly recommend adding this device to you shower experience as it will increase efficiency and effectiveness to the rinsing process
I discovered the magic of these beauties while traveling across the European Continent during the summer of 2005. My first experience came upon arrival in Denmark where I spent six weeks studying EU politics. I arrived at my housing assignment hot, sweaty, and stinky after traveling for two days. I was pleasantly surprised to discover upon entry that each unit had a private bathroom. I shot for the shower after tossing my bags on the bed and turned up the heat to maximum. By the time the steam hit me, I had stripped off my clothes and was diving headlong into that tiled Euro-style shower (the type that soaks the entire bathroom if your not careful). After lathering up with a bar of soap, I went to rinse and noticed that the shower-head was attached via a long flexible tube. I had always considered these showers to be useful only for curious womens’ fulfillment of sexual desires, however, it became clear on that day that the removable shower-head was the perfect tool to efficiently rinse lather (and as i would discover later, conditioner) from your body. I find that it speeds up the rinsing process by at least fifty percent. It also allows for the proper angle to directly rinse that hard to reach grundle area (like a Reach toothbrush and those pesky molars).
At any rate, upon my return to the States, I promptly set out to buy a removable shower head and found them both readily available and inexpensive. I purchased mine at Bed and Bath or a similar establishment but I’ve seen them else ware priced between $20-100. Luckily, these wonderful shower tools are also as easy to install as any new shower head.
So, to all of you shower junkies and smelly folks in need of a cleanse, I recommend that you pick up a removable European-style shower-head today!

Thinking about you applying all those irritants to your face (menthol (twice!), lemon extract, orange extract, whatever abrasive is in your scrub), and then SHAVING on top of all that, I’m getting dermatitis in sympathy! Be careful with all the irritants, kay? If you’re mean to your face like that all the time, it’s gonna rebel and you’re gonna end up red-faced and swollen, so you might consider giving your face a break and using not-so-harsh things on alternating days.
